It’s because they understand how to squeeze every ounce of power out of the body that they have. Many times these guys aren’t particularly strong. But they understand how to make their entire body work as a team to deliver a devastating blow. When you understand that, you can create power that’s more than the sum of your individual strengths. You see in the marital arts today it’s popular to say, "If you just learn how to hit (or how to do any other martial technique), and back that up with a little light exercise that’s all you need and you’ll even be tougher than those big strong guys who waste all that time on exercise. First of all most martial arts today do a very poor job of teaching people how to generate power for striking. You can teach anybody the basic technique, but if you don’t teach them the why and how behind how to really put everything you have into that technique, all you’ll ever get is mediocre results. Punches that’ll barely break wind let alone somebody’s nose. Most of the exercise that people recommend to back up your technical training is pure non-sense. It’s extremely unfortunate that we’re dominated by two schools of thought on how to build your body for fighting. The, "Don’t do anything but light exercise," school which says, "If you’re not lifting just your bodyweight you’re killing yourself." And the, "Train like a bodybuilder," school which says, "Wow! They LOOK big and strong, they must be doing it right, lets train like them." WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! It’s all wastes your time and effort by giving you incomplete training that doesn’t really do the job. You can be the biggest, strongest guy in the world, but if you don’t know how to focus that power into a strike you won’t hit very hard. You can be a little unathletic, weak guy and understand everything there is to know about how to generate power , have incredible technique and guess what? You still won’t hit that hard, because you don’t have the engine to drive those strikes. But there’s no reason you can’t have both. There’s no conflict between being big, strong, and being incredibly enduring and being able to hit like a ton of bricks. In fact if you’re really ever going to get the most out of yourself and transcend to a level in the martial arts that few have gone to, then you had better be doing this combination training, because it’s the secret of unlocking your physical potential. Have I suddenly got something against bodyweight exercises? Do I have a deep-seeded hate for bodybuilders? No! I just have a problem with people telling you you’ll get the results you want out of training programs that can’t deliver. They can’t deliver because they’re limited in what they do and are completely focused the wrong way. The truth is you can have incredible power, the power of a world class strongman, and have massive muscle (if you want… it’s not necessary, but it’s there if you want it), and endurance beyond your most unlimited expectations and still move with grace, speed, and hit as if your hands and feet are made of titanium. The secret is in knowing how to actually deliver a strike with incredible power and how to put your training together to get all the qualities that you want without making them take away from each other. There’s a lot of nonsense going around about how the ancient martial artists trained. There always has been bull floating around in the martial arts and fighting communities. It’s a great way to make money to sell people on the hidden-secret-death-strike that will give you invincibility, and super powers all with no physical training. "Who cares if you’re out of shape? If you just learn our secret technique ninjas and ultimate fighters will fear you!" That’s a lie! We all know of ancient and historical martial arts figures who were incredible fighters. Many times it’s chalked up to, "Well they practiced this brand of kung fu, or they boxed, they did lots of pushups and lifted a set of four-pound dumbbells and suddenly they became super-human strong, could punch holes through concrete walls, leap over tall buildings with a single bound, blah, blah-blah, blah-blah."
None of the old time masters got to be super human without incredibly devoted practice to their specific fighting style and combination training. All around the world, in the true traditions of the martial arts, before they were watered down to be comfortably sold to soccer moms, there was hard training.
