Alternative Conditioning - Hammers & Maces
|
where my grandfather got this hammer I guess I'll never know, but I'm sure glad he did.
|
I'd seen sledgehammer swinging mentioned by a few people and whenever I studied a bit about the old time boxers and wrestlers I'd heard it talked it about.
But if it hadn't been for this monster hammer I probably would never have tried it out and then I'd have missed out on an entire segment of some of the most productive exercises I've ever done.
You see I tend to react to challenges. So I'm walking through the barn one day looking for something, I move a couple of bags over and I see this sledgehammer. Ordinarily I would have ignored it and only associated it with a little bit of demo work I've done, but this hammer was different. It was HUGE. So I pulled it out, showed it to my dad and got to talking about it with him and then got some of the old, "Boy it takes a man to swing a hammer like that." - Yeah… no kiddin', the head is 35 pounds.
I STILL don't know what they used it for, but I know this; Even as strong as I am, when you get to swinging this bad boy around, you'll understand a lot about strength and conditioning. It'll definitely give you the idea that the old time fighters had about this kind of training.
So you know I had to start swinging the thing. And it convinced me that this is butt kickin' productive exercise.
So then I really started to study and look around at all of the different things you can do with a hammer. I began to think about how tough the old time workmen were and how much productive exercise we could learn from them. I picked up the shovel lift from Steve Justa. That started to open a whole new door of using a weighted working implement. Then I began to study some really old stuff and got the idea about the mace, a long handled club that was a weapon of war in many cultures, but also took it's place among the exercise tools of ancient warriors.
So I made a makeshift lifting shovel and a couple of maces. I got a lighter hammer to practice speed based swings and one handed swings. I got to experimenting and training.
What I found was that these boys were surely on to something. The harder I trained the better shape I got in. The harder I swung those hammers and maces, the stronger my grip got and that was just the beginning.
- My abs got stronger.
- My breathing exploded.
- My punching got harder.
- My arms, shoulders and back got more muscular.
- My total body endurance went up.
- My ability to explosively apply force went up.

… And DANG I was having fun!!
Who knew that hardcore productive training could be that fun? Or that you could do that many different things with a hammer or a long weighted club (mace). I guess that's just in my makeup. When I pick up a strength training tool and really get convinced that it's productive, then I gotta start putting tit through it's test runs. I gotta see what it can really do for you. AND I gotta see how many different things you can do with it.
Well let me tell you, when we put this video together, and distilled down all the exercises that we'd come up with, even we were surprised.
How about 90 exercises. That's right… NINETY different ways to swing or lift these implements. 90 different ways for you to get better. In better shape. Better strength. Better endurance. More muscle.
All put together right here for you.
Here's a sample of some of the exercises.

You see what we put on this video is an entire conditioning system that could easily stand alone for turning you into an outstanding athlete and carving out new stone hard muscle.
We've given you exercises to work the grip, the arms the shoulders, the back the waist, even the legs.
Simple swings, off angle swings, swings you never heard of and enough exercises and thoughts on implementing them to give you many entire workouts by themselves if you so choose use it that way. They also easily mix with other strength and conditioning styles.
In fact to me, that is part of the beauty of the sledgehammer/mace or workman/warrior style of training.
You can easily use the exercises that create specific stress on specific muscles to create powerful new development.
Or you can use the general exercises that spread the stress over a large area of the body to blast your conditioning into new realms.
Or you can easily combine these two styles together or with the rest of your program to create an unparalleled intensity in your training and reach your all time best levels of strength and conditioning.
All the while building speed, coordination, striking power, abdominal conditioning, flexibility and an old school no holds barred, scare away the neighbors, real man strength. It's there for the taking. This video will show you how. You provide the sweat.
Are you ready to take up the challenge? Can you do the work? Think you can get as tough as the old timers were?
